The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu by an Act of State Legislature. It was inaugurated by His Excellency Thiru K.R. Narayanan, President of India on September 20th 1997. The University started functioning from 03.10.1997
The Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University aims towards advancement of legal education and promotion of knowledge of law in general. The University will strive to improve the communal harmony and achieve the goal of egalitarian society through legal literacy programmes.
The Law University strives to promote the skills of advocacy among the law students and research scholars so as to serve the society with a sense of responsibility while providing legal services, making legislation and suggesting law reforms.
The Law University organizes “Moot Court” Competition for the students of various Law Colleges in Tamil Nadu; such competition will be conducted at the national level also.
The Law University organizes suitable programmes to impart basic legal knowledge for those living in the remote and rural areas.
The Law University holds examinations and confer degree, titles, diplomas and other academic distinctions on persons who shall have pursued an approved course of study in the University, University College or any college affiliated or deemed to be affiliated to the University.

The University offers B.A.,B.L. (Hons) , 5 Year B.L. Degree, 3 Year B.L. (Hons) Degree , 3 Year B.L. Degree
TNDALU- admissions
FOR B.A.,B.L. (Hons)-
A candidate should have passed Higher Secondary Examination (10+2) or equivalent examination recognized by The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Chennai and should have secured not less than 70% of the total marks in the aggregate of all the subjects. The candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe communities should have secured not less than 60% of the total marks in the aggregate of all subjects.
FOR 3 Year B.L. (Hons) Degree
- Qualification: A candidate should have passed B.E./M.B.B.S./B.Sc. (any Science/Mathematics graduate) and should have secured not less than 70% of the total marks in the aggregate of all the subjects. The candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe communities should have secured not less than 65% of the total marks in the aggregate of all subjects.
- Age Limit: A candidate should not have completed 23 years of age as on 1stJune 2008. The candidates belonging to SC/ST communities should not have completed 25 years of age as on 1stJune 2008
For 5 Year B.L. Degree
A Complete pass in the Higher Secondary (+2) or Equivalent Examination with not less than 45% of marks in aggregate. However, for the purpose of selection and admission marks obtained in the subjects excluding languages shall alone be taken into consideration.
The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University shall be the Nodal Agency of the Government for selection of candidates for admission to 5 Year B.L. Degree Course (Regular) in the following six Government Law Colleges.

The Library has a good collection of CD ROMs like Supreme Court Cases - Full -Text, AIR Supreme Court - 1950-2004, AIR High Courts on CD - ROM 1985 -2004, Legal 2000 Statutes of India: Central Acts and multimedia on Mahatma Gandhi, Intellectual Property Rights: Key to new wealth
The University library subscribes Online Legal Database www.lexisnexis.com, www.manupatra.com and www.indialawsite.com To avail library facilities in the British Council Library and American Information Resource Center Inter Library Loan Facilities, the university library has obtained Instructional Membership in these libraries.
The Library has audiocassettes of Linguaphone to improve the fluency of the students in English Language. The also has the educational videotapes for the students to learn effectively. The Library has 15 computers for the students to browse the legal websites through out the world and CD - ROMs for effective learning with I mbps broadband connection.
