The concept of a national institution to act as a pace-setter and a testing ground for bold experiments in legal education came up before the Bar Council of India in the context of the Council’s statutory responsibility for maintaining standards in professional legal education under the Advocates Act, 1961. The idea gained strength in the Legal Education Committee of the Bar Council of India and eventually the BCI demanded a deemed University status from the University Grants Commission.
A large number of retired Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts as well as Senior Advocates have offered to assist the NLSIU in its teaching and research programmes making education at NLSIU a rare and exciting experience to the student body. The NLSIU started its journey in 1987 under the stewardship of its Founder Director, Dr. N.R. Madhava Menon. The first batch of students joined on July 1, 1988 in the integrated five year B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) Course. The NLSIU started its courses in the premises of the Central College , Bangalore University . The NLSIU moved to its own premises at the present address in 1992.
NLS- Courses Offered
Postgraduate- A candidate for admission to LL.M. course should have passed LL.B. Degree or its equivalent from a recognised University and should have secured at least 50% of marks in the aggregate of the maximum marks prescribed.
Undergraduate- The number of seats available for UG courses is 50 per year.
Research Degrees- An applicant seeking admission to the M.Phil Degree Programme shall have an LL.M. degree either from the NLSIU or from any other recognised University, securing not less than a ‘B’ grade or an aggregate of 50% marks or its equivalent.

Admission Procedure- Eligible candidates should apply in the prescribed form before the last date prescribed for the submission of the application forms. Application forms can be obtained from the Registrar by sending a demand draft for
Rs. 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only) drawn in favour of the Registrar, National Law School of India University, Bangalore . Candidates for LL.M. course shall be selected by the Admission Committee consisting of the Director as Chairman, the Chairman of the Post-Graduate Council and three other members of the Faculty nominated by the Director as members, based on a combined assessment of :
a) the performance at the admission test conducted by the NLSIU ; and
b) performance at the interview to determine the aptitude for higher studies and research 15% seats are reserved for SC candidates and 7.5% for ST candidates.

Research Degrees
Admission Procedure
Eligible candidates, may apply to the Registrar in the prescribed form, which can be obtained after paying an application fee of Rs. 1000/- by Demand draft drawn on the State Bank of India or any other nationalised bank, payable to NLSIU at Bangalore and submit the same duly filled in within the stipulated time. Selection for M.Phil. course, both for the seats in the open quota and those reserved in favour of the sponsored candidates, shall be based on merit basis of the determined on the performance of the candidates, at the interview and presentation of research proposal, by the Admission Committee constituted by the Director for this purpose.
The number of candidates admitted to the M.Phil. Degree shall ordinarily be five in a year. This number can be increased at the discretion of the Director depending on the strength of the Faculty, their responsibilities towards other courses and the need of the Universities / Law Colleges sponsoring the teachers in law.
NLS- Fee Structure
Tuition Fee for UG courses is Rs.55,000/- per annum and additional charges are there for the mess and the hostel. The tuition fee for the LLM courses is Rs.30,000/- per annum.
NLS- Infrastructure
The National Law School of India University is located in Nagarbhavi, approximately 10 kms from the Bangalore City railway station. The Law School is spread over an 18 acre campus at the entrance to the Jnana Bharati Campus from the Nagarbhavi end. The University is fully residential, with complete residential facilities for students and staff. The campus had its first building in 1992 and today it has a main academic block, a distance education block, three Halls of Residence each for men and women, one post- graduate women’s hostel, staff quarters and a well equipped training centre with residential facilities for participants participating in the training programs.
A new library building named “Shri Narayan Rao Melgiri” has been built with the generous donation made by Mrs. Sudha Murthy of the Infosys Foundation and with the financial assistance from the University Grants Commission, New Delhi
