Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) is the statutory university established by the Govt. of Gujarat National Law University Act, 2003.
The objectives of the University, the GNLU Act 2003 proclaims, ” shall be to advance and disseminate learning and knowledge of law and legal processes and their role in national development: to develop in the students and the research scholars sense of responsibility to serve society in the field of law by developing skills in regard to advocacy, legal services, legislation, parliamentary practice, law reforms and such other matters; to make law and legal processes efficient instruments of social development; and to promote inter-disciplinary study of law in relation to management, technology, international cooperation and development.”
The ethos of imparting education in Gujarat National Law University comprises of a mutual endeavor of the Faculty and the students who become part of our august family after clearing the hurdle of a rigorous and strenuous selection procedure. The cream of the country finds a place amidst us. The University has been in a process of striving for academic and professional excellence in the field of legal studies in the country. The University became functional from the year, 2004.
GNLU- Courses Offered
LL.B. programme
GNLU is the only national law university in India to offer interdisciplinary legal course in all the three streams. It offers five year integrated degree course leading to the award of following degrees:
- B.A., LL.B (Hons.)
- B.Com., LL.B (Hons.)
- B.Sc., LL.B (Hons.)
LL.M. Programme
The LL.M. programme is devised with a view to producing competent teachers and researchers. The syllabus is based on the UGC’s Model Syllabus on Law 2001. The Course is of two year duration with four semesters.
The system is devised in such as way as to offer number of specializations. The core subjects which all students have to study are:
- Jurisprudence and Legal Theory
- Comparative Constitutional Law
- Law of Obligations
- Research Methodology and Practicals
Specializations would be offered in the area of Criminology, International Law and Intellectual Property Rights.
GNLU- Admissions
For UG Courses-
Admission shall be based exclusively on the performance in the Common Law Admission Test. However to qualify for admission the candidate-
- Must have passed the Higher Secondary School Examination (10+2) or an Examination equivalent thereof, securing in aggregate not less then 50% in all the core subjects and English put together. Candidate with compartment marksheet will not be eligible for the admission.
- Must not be above the age of 20 years as on 1st July 2009.
In the case of candidate belonging to SC / ST category, the age limit will be 22 years as on 1st July 2009.
All those who have appeared in the qualifying examination are entitled to write the Admission Test. However, any candidate securing less than 50% in the qualifying examination will be denied admission notwithstanding his / her rank in the Admission Test.
GNLU admits 160 students with the following breakup

For PG Courses-
A candidate should have secured a LL.B. degree or its equivalent from a recognized University, having obtained not less than 55% marks for General category and 50% marks for Reserved categories in the aggregate. Candidates in the final year of their LL.B. course can also apply but their admission would be confirmed only after they submit results of the LLB final year.
The intake for this year is confined to fifteen candidates subject to the reservation policy.
GNLU- Fee Structure
For UG Courses-
Tuition Fee for General Rs. 50,000/- p.a. and for SC / ST it is Rs. 37,500/- p.a.
For PG Courses-
Total Fee for this year is Rs. 27,500/-
GNLU- Infrastructure
GNLU follows a semester system with six subjects in each semester. It is a fully residential university. Presently, it operates from temporary premises and its own campus development work is underway at Koba, Gandhinagar.
GNLU academic blocks and halls of residence are fully equipped with internet facility. Computer laboratory is also equipped with a complete set of database of the journals such as the All India Reporter and Supreme Court Cases online.
GNLU in pursuance of its endeavor to present an opportunity of interaction between the legal industry and final year students will organize the summer Internship Programme. The Internship Programme is specifically designed to enable Advocates, Law firms, Companies and legal process outsourcing companies to have an occasion to interact first hand with the graduating batch during annual summer break scheduled in May & June 2009.
The university has a rich library and other facilities for the purpose of overall development of the students. It very well encourages co-curricular activities amongst the students.
GNLU- Placement
Committee on Recruitment Affairs (CRA) is the official students body responsible for facilitating the GNLU Recruitment Programme for the batch scheduled to graduate in the year 2009.
The Recruitment Week shall be organized by the CRA for facilitating final placements for the students of the batch 2004-2009. Organizations and individuals interested in providing particulars regarding the organizational ethos, the nature of the work expected of an employee or any other information they seek to communicate to the students of the said batch are encouraged to provide such information to the Committee by way of presentations (Pre-Placement Talks) or any other mode that they may deem appropriate.
