Faculty of Law, Banaras Hindu University, Banaras

The Banaras Hindu University was established in 1916 and is one of the most prestigious universities of the Country and is the largest residential university in Asia. Besides Faculty of Law, the University enshrines within its precinct 14 Faculties and 3 Institutes having 124 teaching departments imparting instructions and carrying research in diverse disciplines.

In furtherance of the objectives of the establishment of Banaras Hindu University, the Faculty of Law of the Banaras Hindu University (later on named as Banaras Law School) has not lagged behind and since its establishment in the year 1923 has constantly played a significant role in revamping the legal education and is ranked within top ten Law Schools in India including National Law Schools.

It is a matter of satisfaction that the innovative scheme of the Law School to reform the legal education was adopted by the Bar Council of India at the national level and brought changes in the pattern of legal education all over the country. Law School, during this period, apart from launching new courses also experimented with new techniques of pedagogy whichwas a total departure from the transfer of information of knowledge taking place in classes all over the country .The Banaras Law School was the first in the country to introduce the class method/ problem method in teaching methodology at both LL.B. and LL.M. levels The Law School was perhaps the first in the country to prepare case materials for the students of LL.B. classes As early as 1970 the Law School reached the top slot in the country and other institutions acknowledged its leadership.

BHU – Courses

It was the year 1978 ,that the LL.B. courses were restructured and clinical component was included in them.The Banaras Law School was one of the Six Universities in India to start CLINICAL LEGAL SERVICES.

During 1999-2000 , keeping in view the University Grants Commission Guidelines , viz . expansion of teaching , research, redesigning of courses and enhancement of the capability as an active center of teaching and research , the Banaras Law School introduced in its LL.B. and LL.M. curriculum various challenging and modern courses.

BHU – Admissions

The admission to both Under Graduate Course LL.B. and Post Graduate Course LL.M. is through All India Entrance Examination conducted by the University generally in the month of May. Interested persons for forms and notification may contact www.bhu.ac.in generally in the month of Feburary-March.

B.A./ B.Sc./ B.Com./ Shastri (at least 10+2+3 pattern) securing a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate OR any other Degree/Examination under at least 10+2+3 pattern recognised by the Bar Council of India for the purpose of admission to LL.B. Course securing a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate.

The faculty has both Under  Graduate and Post Graduate Course.The Under Graduate Course consists of 3 year-6 Semester LL.B. course. The students get specialization in

• Intellectual Property Rights
• Criminology
• Labour Laws
• Animal Laws
• Taxation
• Environmental Law

The Post Graduate Course consists of 4 Semesters ( 2 year)  LL.M degree. There are two courses conducted by the faculty-

• LL.M.   General
• LL.M.   H.R.D.E. (Human Rights and  Duties Education  )

BHU – Infrastructure

The faculty has a Moot Court Society which conducts Intra Faculty Moot Court Competition apart from the curriculum Moot, on a fortnightly basis .Its objective is to inculcate Court Ethics in the students and to transform them into good lawyers and thereby help  in the overall development of the students. Also since the society comprises mainly of students across all semesters of LL.B. (6 semester) course.  It also helps in developing the sense of responsibility, coordination and cooperation among the students. The Intra Faculty Moots are generally presided by practising Lawyers and the students are given problems relating to diverse fields of law.
